Obscure Tales
A downloadable roleplaying game
Obscure Tales is an tabletop roleplaying game with a noble-bright outlook.
Ideal for heroic fantasy or sword and sorcery style adventures
It aims to support choice filled action and flavourful magic. Combat and spellcasting involve many decisions made during play rather than at character design. This allows two characters with identical statistics on paper to fight in completely different styles.
Characters are highly customisable based on spending experience points on whichever abilities you feel suit their background and story rather than any class or playbook.
A 3D6 based system in which benefits and drawbacks can result in addition to the success or failure of the task attempted. This core mechanic means that characters are highly likely to success in their areas of competance but longshots are much less likely.
Many characters will have magic. Some learn spells via arts such as geomancy, wound-weaving or enchantment and skills such assensing and shielding. Others channel their mana to their gods, hoping for their favour, which can be used to sway events (rolls) in ways those gods approve of. Learning magic does not preclude becoming a hardy warrior or skillful thief.
Characters have personality traits such as bold, mystical or generous. These have direct game effects - a bold character is more likely to act quickly but less likely to spot an ambush, a mystical one has more magical power but is more vulnerable to spells. These traits also define the approaches open to characters in social situations - the best person in a group to speak to a bunch of rowdy mercenaries might not be the same one as will sway a pious lord or mystical group of fae. Reputations also have powerful impact on any social skill.
